What you should know about probiotics!

Probiotics have been hitting the media lately where research suggests that they have a much wider area of application than previously thought. One case of research, for instance, shows that they may significantly reduce the risks of tooth decay and cavities. In the light of this intriguing discovery we decided to take the chance to have our own look at why probiotics are becoming so important and what benefits we might experience from their use. We should probably start however with an explanation as to what probiotics are! So, what are probiotics?

Probiotics are living organisms which can contribute to the maintenance or balance of healthy gut bacteria in our gastrointestinal system. They make a diverse class of microorganisms where food supplements usually include around 16 types. At present these make up the formulas of food supplements and are recommended in cases of gastrointestinal disturbances and skin diseases.

Newborn infants take around 1 year to develop their microflora balance through their food intake and immediate environment. Later on in their life, changes in one of these factors tip the balance between the good gut bacteria and the bad or pathogenic. The most common case of prescribing probiotics to restore this balance is diarrhea. Here, we should note that there are different types, it could be chronic or antibiotic-induced where it can lead to clostridium difficile infection.

According to researchers probiotics are also helpful in treatment of lactose intolerance, urinary tract infections and constipation. Some bacteria might also prove very important in the development of effective anti-allergic products since their presence guarantees good protection against allergic diseases and reactions. Among the most important representatives of probiotics are the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. If you wish to supplement your regime with extra probiotics to stimulate a healthy microflora they can do so in two ways. One way is to consume foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and miso. You should be careful to check their content carefully though to see if these microorganisms were preserved during processing. The other way is to take supplements.

As a supplement probiotics can come in several forms. They can be dried as powder-like substance and they can be then dissolved into filtered water and taken on an empty stomach. Cold water activates the bacteria. Probiotic powder is first activated in the mouth before it moves down the digestive tract. Capsules have an advantage over powders as they dissolve on the right spot. Fluids, on the other hand, make the most inconvenient supplement source of probiotics. Their due date expires 2 weeks after their production date. They also lack in effectiveness.
